The museum was established alongside the founding of Omsk State University named after F. M. Dostoevsky (OmSU) in 1974. On the university's opening day the first exhibition was presented, consisting of two parts. The first displayed materials dedicated to the history of OmSU, and the second - the ethnography of the peoples of Siberia.
