Kalyazin Local History Museum
About museum
The Kalyazin Local History Museum was founded in 1920 and is located in the Epiphany Church building, which was built in 1781. The museum's exhibitions and collections hold architectural, ceramic and sculptural fragments, as well as examples of applied art from the 18th–19th centuries. A new exhibition was opened in 1990. The construction of the Vyshny Volochyok waterway system during the era of Peter I led to the development of crafts and trade. On display are a model of a Volga barge, an anchor, ship cannons, blacksmiths' products, painted tiles, samples of fabrics, embroidery and goldwork of the 18th century. Kalyazin lace was known throughout Russia and was purchased in the two capitals. The museum received items of noble household use from the estates of Kalyazin Uyezd. Currently research is being carried out on abandoned sites, old cemeteries and manor estates. Scientific conferences with the participation of scholars from major Russian universities, museum staff and local historians are held annually.
