About museum
The Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore is the first museum established in the Vyatka Governorate and one of the oldest museums in Russia. It was founded in 1866 on the initiative of the public and state figure P. V. Alabin. With the support of Emperor Alexander II, a collection of minerals and rocks was acquired for the museum. Over 155 years of existence the museum has assembled a vast collection of materials on the history, ethnography, culture and nature of the Vyatka region and Russia — more than 253,000 exhibits. Currently the local history museum comprises: the Main Building, the museum and exhibition center "Diorama", the literary museums of A. S. Grin and M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, and the Museum of Military Glory. It serves as a center for local studies and as a guardian of the material and spiritual culture of the region and part of Russia's national heritage. The museum attracts many visitors, offering them the opportunity to explore the Vyatka region and its history. In 2022 the Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore was named after its founder — Petr Vladimirovich Alabin.
