The State Archive of the Ulyanovsk Region is a rich repository of archival documents, containing more than one million items that reflect the history of the Simbirsk Governorate and the Ulyanovsk Region. The archive preserves documents from the 16th–17th centuries, charters of Russian tsars, documents bearing the autographs of Russian emperors, metric books (parish registers), archives of noble families, and so on. The archive carries out extensive work responding to social, legal and thematic inquiries from the public. The archive regularly holds exhibitions of documents that are displayed in the city's museums. Archive specialists give tours and lessons for students in the reading room. Publications for the media, academic collections and monographs are prepared based on the archival documents.
