About museum
Sergiyevo-Posadsky Museum-Reserve is the only object in the Moscow Region classified as an especially valuable cultural heritage site of the Russian Federation.
Holds a unique collection of precious donations made by Russian sovereigns and prominent figures of Russian history to the Trinity-Sergius Monastery from the 11th to the 19th centuries.
Houses one of the finest collections in Russia of folk, decorative, and applied arts, including works from all the most renowned centers of Russian folk crafts.
Displays the world-famous matryoshka in all its variety in the exhibition “Museum of the Russian Matryoshka”.
“The Hermitage of Russian Culture” — this is how academician D.S. Likhachev called the Sergiyevo-Posadsky State Historical and Art Museum-Reserve — one of the oldest museums in the Moscow Region. The museum has always been a principal attraction on the “Golden Ring” tourist route.
The museum was founded on April 20, 1920, based on the collection of historical and artistic valuables of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, which over time was supplemented by collections of folk and contemporary decorative and applied arts. The museum’s holdings number approximately 200,000 items, which form the basis for its exhibitions and displays.
In 1992 the museum was declared an especially valuable object of the national cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
Today the museum, located in the historic part of the town near the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, is represented by four sites: the exhibition and display building “Riznitsa of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra”, the historical and architectural complex “Konny Dvor” (Horse Yard), the Main administrative and exhibition Building, and the Local History Building.
The halls of the Main Building host temporary exhibitions by artists: from traditional art to contemporary forms of painting, graphics, decorative and applied arts, and photography. Here you will see works created by artists from Sergiyev Posad, Moscow, and other Russian cities.
