The local history museum in Saratov is one of the oldest museums in Russia. It was founded on December 12, 1886 under the Saratov Learned Archival Commission. By 1889 the museum's collections already included 144 exhibits donated by city institutions and residents. Exhibition halls feature themes such as "City and People", "Natural Rarities", "Road to Space" and others. In the second half of the 20th century, 10 branches were incorporated into the museum, including the Saratov Ethnographic Museum, the Novouzensk Local History Museum, the Balakovo City History Museum, the Vasily Chapayev House-Museum, the Kalininsky, Arkadaksky, Krasnoarmeysky and Atkarsky local history museums, and the Samoylovsky and Marksovsky local history museums.
