About museum
The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat is the principal monument of 16th-century Old Russian architecture, representing the history of Russia and its spiritual heritage. It is truly a unique monument of Old Russian art and architecture. The cathedral remains an important attraction for tourists and visitors to the city of Moscow. The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat is a magnificent example of 16th-century Old Russian architecture, erected in 1555-1561 by order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the conquest of the Kazan Khanate. Its consecration was associated with other significant events of Russian spiritual life of the time: the appearance of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the glorification of Barlaam of Khutyn and Alexander of Svir. The cathedral houses four churches dedicated to the three Patriarchs of Constantinople, to Cyprian and Justina, to Alexander of Svir and to Gregory of Armenia. Also present are the eastern and western churches, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Heavenly City, respectively.
