About museum

On July 4, 1992, the Oktyabrsky Local History Museum was opened to the public in honor of the 55th anniversary of the Oktyabrsky District. The idea to create the museum was proposed by well-known local historians of the district: S. N. Nartymov, G. N. Timofeev, T. V. Diodorova and G. N. Lazarev. All preparatory work was carried out under the direction of G. I. Makarova, who is the founder and first director of the museum. The museum has six areas of activity: archaeology; history prior to incorporation into the Russian state; the region's history as part of the centralized Russian state; the region's history during the Soviet period; ethnography; and natural history. The museum features nine permanent and five temporary exhibitions, as well as an ethnographic collection of the region's indigenous peoples — the Khanty and Mansi — and of Russian settlers who arrived in the 16th–17th centuries. The museum collection comprises more than ten collections: a collection of written documents, an archaeology collection, a numismatics collection, a painting collection, and others.
