Novokayakent Local History Museum
About museum
In 1994 a branch of the A. Taho-Godi National Museum of Dagestan was opened in Novokayakent. Its collections contain more than 1,100 exhibits. During a tour visitors can learn about artifacts from the prehistoric period when Dagestan was the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean. The museum displays fragments of fossilized fish, mollusks, bones of a Sarmatian whale, as well as Stone Age tools and archaeological finds discovered in the Kayakent district. In addition, there is a collection of exhibits representing the ethnography and everyday life of the local population. Here you can see national clothing, footwear, household items and decorative and applied arts. In earlier times most women of the Kayakent district were engaged in carpet weaving, and the museum exhibits an old wooden loom. Information is also presented about Kayakent residents who fought for Soviet power, defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War, and recipients of the title "Hero of Socialist Labor".
