Research vessel 'Vityaz'
About museum
Research vessel 'Vityaz' is a legendary ship in the history of oceanology. Under the flag of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR it completed 65 scientific voyages, covered 800,000 miles and carried out 7,942 scientific stations. During its service the maximum depth in the Mariana Trench (11,022 m) was measured, and a new type of animal — the pogonophorans — was discovered. A school of domestic oceanology formed on board, and scientists from 50 Russian research institutes and 20 countries around the world were invited to work there. In 1990 a decision was made to preserve the ship and create a museum on board. It became the main exhibit of the Museum of the World Ocean and the central feature of its historic fleet quay. The ship houses various exhibitions: 'Polar Hall', 'Russia Opens Its Shores', the 'Vityaz' laboratories, memorial cabins, the 'Amber Cabin', the Hall of Great Geographical Discoveries, the 'Heart of the Ship', etc. Visiting this museum aboard the 'Vityaz' is an unforgettable and special experience for all visitors.
