F. I. Tyutchev Museum-Reserve 'Ovstug'
About museum
The village of Ovstug is located on eight hills that descend to the Desna River. In the 1770s, by order of N. A. Tyutchev, a wooden house was built in the center of the village; Fyodor Tyutchev was born there on December 5, 1803. In the 1830s–1840s, his father Ivan Nikolaevich commissioned architect G. F. Gerasimov to design a new stone house in the late Empire style. Above the central part of the house a mezzanine was added with a lantern-domed cupola and a spire for a flagpole. In the mezzanine the bedroom of the poet's daughter M. F. Tyutcheva-Birileva was restored, as well as the room of Ernestina, the poet's wife. The mezzanine's plan shows three more small rooms, which were combined into a single hall to display the Tyutchev family's personal belongings and documents. The interior of the house has preserved an atmosphere of coziness, warmth and friendliness characteristic of the owners. The noble house has retained its historical appearance and interior, allowing one to imagine how its inhabitants lived and spent their time.
