Avant-Garde Museum - Gallery on Shabolovka

About museum

In October 2014 the team working at the Jewish Museum opened a new Center for the Avant-Garde in the heart of the Khavsko-Shabolovsky residential complex, created as a project by the ASNOVA group. Our mission is to educate the public about the magnificent cultural and artistic heritage of the 1910s–1930s, which had a significant influence on the 20th century — from furniture design to cinema, from architecture to book layout, while also taking into account the socio-political and scientific contexts that shaped this art. Our goal is to spark interest in the avant-garde among as many city residents as possible, drawing attention to the problems facing the architectural monuments of this era. Our main tasks are to preserve, understand, and interpret the avant-garde. From late 2012 until August 2014 more than 200 lectures were given, about 30 guided tours, and numerous concerts, film screenings, master classes, children's workshops and exhibitions devoted to avant-garde art and to the culture, history and everyday life of the USSR in the 1920s–1960s, as well as two year-long special courses — 'Philosophy of Art' by Andrey Velikanov and 'Elementary Particles of the Avant-Garde'.
