The A. M. Gorky and F. I. Chaliapin Museum is one of the oldest literary museums in Russia, opened on March 12, 1940. It is dedicated to the life and work of A. M. Gorky, the eminent Russian writer and public figure. It is located in the house of the townsman M. I. Belyaev, where in 1886–1887 A. M. Peshkov (Maxim Gorky) worked as an assistant in the bakery of A. S. Derenkov. The museum's collections contain more than 60,000 storage units, including memorial items of A. M. Gorky donated by E. P. and N. A. Peshkov, letters, the table and armchair from the dacha in Gorki near Moscow, the clothing in which the writer arrived in Kazan in 1928, more than 2,958 books from his library, authentic photographs, and a Chaliapin collection reflecting the life and work of F. I. Chaliapin. The museum is a cultural center of the city with long-standing traditions and a unique history. The street on which it is located is named after the writer.
