Workshop of the artist-restorers A.P. Grekov and V.B. Grekova
About museum
The workshop of the artist-restorers Aleksandr Petrovich and Valentina Borisovna Grekov has been located in the Novgorod Kremlin since 1966. Large-scale and complex work was carried out here to restore the frescoes of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior at Kovalevo (1380), which were damaged during the Great Patriotic War. From the fragments, 120 compositions were assembled, 30 of which were mounted on titanium panels using the Grekovs' method. The workshop was turned into a museum housing the exhibition 'Revival of the 1380 Painting of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior at Kovalevo'. It includes compositions on titanium panels, copies of the paintings, and diagrams created by A. P. Grekov. There is also a section on the life and work of the Grekov restorers. The workshop is still active. Visitors can see modern restorers of monumental painting at work as they continue restoring the frescoes of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior at Kovalevo.
