K. E. Tsiolkovsky House and Estate

About museum

In 1849 Eduard Ignatievich Tsiolkovsky was transferred as the county forester to Spassky Uyezd. The forester's family lived in Izhevsk in a rented house on Krasnaya Street from 1849 to 1854. In 1854 they moved to a more spacious dwelling on Polnaya Street (since 1936 the street has been called Tsiolkovsky Street). In this house on September 17, 1857, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the founder of cosmonautics, was born. Before the Revolution the house was known as the steward's house of the landowner Demidov. In Soviet times it belonged to private owners. In 2007, on the scientist's 150th anniversary, the house was purchased by the government of Ryazan Oblast and became part of the K. E. Tsiolkovsky Museum. It houses a local history exhibition depicting the life of the residents of the village of Izhevskoye at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. Work to memorialize the house and estate is planned in the coming years.
