House of Peter I in Derbent
About museum
The House of Peter I in Derbent is a small earthen hut where the emperor stayed during the Persian campaign of 1722. For the residents of Derbent it was something of a shrine. In 1848 Prince Mikhail Vorontsov, Viceroy of the Caucasus, ordered a stone fence to be built around the hut. Instead of a fence, a pavilion was constructed. During the Soviet period the House of Peter I was forgotten. The dugout was gradually reclaimed by the ground, and a residential building was erected on its site. It wasn't until 2015 that the House of Peter I was granted the status of a museum complex following archaeological fieldwork. The colonnade was restored, and a monument to Peter I was erected nearby along with a modern museum. The museum's exhibition consists of items found during the excavations: coins, bullets, pendant crosses and fragments of weapons.
