Yakov P. Mayorov-Shketan House Museum
About museum
In 1992 a museum was opened in the birthplace of Yakov Pavlovich Mayorov (Shketan), a classic of Mari literature and a playwright. A house was built on the site of his estate, with the facade restored to its original appearance. The interior was also reconstructed according to the recollections of relatives and fellow villagers. The central feature of the house is the stove, and the place of honor is given to the dining table with a samovar. The writer's desk and numerous books and biographical materials displayed on stands also have their place. In the kitchen and the entry hall one can see household utensils used in the late 19th – early 20th century. In 2018 the museum's exhibition was updated, which made it possible not only to present the writer's life and work, but also to hold museum-educational sessions about the traditions, culture and everyday life of the Mari people. New exhibits appeared in the museum, and the old ones were given new life.
