The Days of Military Glory of Russia encompass 18 notable dates. One of them, significant and important, is the Day of the first naval victory in Russian history: the victory of the Russian fleet under the command of Peter I over the Swedes at Cape Gangut (1714).
This topic was the focus of the museum program “Russia's Naval Glory,” which took place at the A.N. Radishchev Museum for children from the Istoki health camp at the school in the village of Makhalino, Kuznetsky District.
The children were told the story of the battle at Cape Gangut and that during the Great Northern War, which lasted 21 years, there were many large battles, but the largest naval engagement was the Battle of Gangut. The battle took place on July 27 (August 7) off Cape Gangut (Hanko) in the Baltic Sea. The Russian fleet was commanded by Fyodor Apraksin and Tsar Peter Alekseyevich. They made excellent use of all the enemy's weaknesses, demonstrating only their own strength.
The Russian fleet mainly consisted of rowing vessels, which maneuvered well in calm conditions and in shallow waters but were very weak in the open deep sea. The Swedish fleet mainly comprised sailing ships. Sweden dominated the Baltic Sea, but its ships were very ineffective during windless periods and when sailing in shallow waters. At the end of July 1714 there was a calm on the Baltic Sea. The Swedish fleet relied on sails, so it could hardly move. This was one of the reasons for Russia's victory at Gangut, since the Russian fleet was mainly made up of rowing galleys.
Program participants learned that the principal hero of this battle was Peter I; he personally took part in the boarding fight and by his example inspired the Russian sailors, who in a matter of minutes captured all the Swedish vessels. It was the first major naval victory in Russian history, securing for Peter I freedom of action in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. It became a significant step on the road to the formation of the Russian Empire.
The event, aimed at children, sought not only to recall the glorious victory of the Russian fleet but also to instill in young hearts a sense of pride in their homeland and respect for their people's heroic past.
