Exhibition 'Sunset of One Hundred and Forty Suns'

Where: Moscow, GES-2 Cultural Center

When: until March 24, 2024; free admission, by prior registration

'Sunset of One Hundred and Forty Suns' is a reference to a poem by Mayakovsky and an attempt to look at the theme of space from different angles. The curators reflect on the place given to space in history and society. They recall both critical views on the structure of the world and Soviet romanticization. The exhibition is divided into the sections 'Our Century', 'Sketches of the Future' and 'On the Edge of Utopia'. A large exhibition on the basement level includes works by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Valery Koshlyakov, El Lissitzky, Natalia Goncharova and Kazimir Malevich.

Exhibition 'Light'

Where: Moscow, New Tretyakov Gallery

When: from October 17, 2023 to January 8, 2024; ticket prices 150–300 rubles

F. Infante from the cycle 'Two Lights'. 1998. State Tretyakov Gallery

For a long time light was perceived only as a functional element of life. Over time, artists showed increasing interest in its properties. In the 20th century light became an independent protagonist of visual art, architecture, theatrical productions and performances. The exhibition introduces works by authors of different generations in which light — as a source, art object or instrument — plays a primary role. The exhibition includes paintings and graphics, photography, video, installations and objects by both well-known artists and fellows of the experimental studios of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia and invited authors: Ivan Chuikov, Francisco Infante-Arana, Vladimir Potapov, Anton Batishev, Evgenia Buravleva, Andrey Volkov, Alexey Dyakov, Dmitry Kolistratov, Olga Krasutskaya, Anna Lapshinova, Asmik Melkonyan, Semyon Motolyants, Yegor Plotnikov, Nikolai Ryndin, Dmitry Samodin, Anna Selina, Alexey Spirenkov, Dima Filippov, Andrey Shkarin, Maria Efimova, Elena Yamlikhanova.

Exhibition 'Marc Chagall. Under One Sky'

Where: St. Petersburg, Bashmakov Gallery

When: from October 14, 2023 to February 18, 2024; ticket prices 350–500 rubles

Marc Chagall, 'Village at Night'. From the series 'Behind the Mirror'. Lithograph, 1950.

Marc Chagall, 'Village at Night'. From the series 'Behind the Mirror'. Lithograph, 1950.

The exhibition 'Under One Sky' is a retrospective of key moments in Marc Chagall's graphic work. The show features original graphics from Pavel Bashmakov's collection — one of the largest private collections of the avant-garde artist. The project tells the story of three countries — Russia, Israel and France — which at different stages of the artist's life and creative path were both home and inspiration. The subjects of the works on display will be familiar to viewers, for example the engravings for N.V. Gogol's 'Dead Souls'. This marks the very beginning of the path: the first collaboration with the famous Parisian publisher Ambroise Vollard, which largely launched Marc Chagall's worldwide fame, and the etchings later brought the artist the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale. The mature period of the artist's work in the exhibition is represented by pieces devoted to biblical subjects. The show also presents works on key themes in Chagall's oeuvre and his sources of inspiration: his native Vitebsk, his wife and muse Bella, and others.

Exhibition 'Russia in Silks'

Where: Kolomna, Museum-Laboratory 'Silk Factory'

When: from December 22, 2023 to February 25, 2024; ticket prices 300–400 rubles

For the first time to a wide audience, the exhibition presents rarities from the collection of the Museum-Laboratory 'Silk Factory' — gold-woven and kanavat panels produced in Kolomna at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries. The core of the exhibition is the folk costume collection of Lyubov Alipova. Visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted with a private collection of authentic peasant clothing from the 19th–early 20th centuries from various regions of Russia, from north to south. The exhibition's curator is Andrey Borovsky, an art historian, ethnoculturalist and researcher of traditional costume.

Exhibition 'UNDERGROUND 2024'

Where: Yekaterinburg, Museum of Architecture and Design UrGAHU

When: from December 29 to January 25, 2024; ticket prices from 50 rubles

UNDERGROUND 2024 is an art project by a community of artists, architects and designers, most of whom began their creative activity back in the perestroika era, participating in the first avant-garde protest exhibitions of visual art in the Soviet Union. These are authors with an active creative stance, largely representing new trends in the development of art. What is UNDERGROUND in visual art? It is how some contemporary artists see the world around them. It is an extreme search for new artistic ideas. It is art that is, in many ways, incomprehensible and enigmatic. It is a reflection on what has already happened and an engaged look toward the future.
