On March 19, 2024, the exhibition “Rejoice, Moscow! Ross is in Paris!” opened at the Borodino Panorama Museum, timed to the 210th anniversary of the entry of Russian troops and their allies into Paris on 19 (31) March 1814.
The exhibition’s title is taken from a line of A.S. Pushkin’s poem “Reminiscence in Tsarskoye Selo,” which the poet recited at the Lyceum examination in 1815.
The exhibition presents portraits of historical figures whose names are directly associated with the siege of Paris and the subsequent triumphant entry of the allied troops into the French capital. Field Marshal K. von Schwarzenberg and General M. B. Barclay de Tolly commanded the allied armies. The defense of Paris was held by the French corps of Marshals Marmont and Mortier. Aide-de-camp to Alexander I, M. F. Orlov, played a significant role in the negotiations on the capitulation. General F. V. Osten-Sacken served as the military governor of Paris.
Early 19th-century engravings capture the allies’ ceremonial procession through the streets of Paris, the dismantling of Napoleon’s statue from the Vendôme Column, and Napoleon’s signing of the act of abdication. Graphic sheets depicting scenes of the Easter service on the Place de la Concorde in April 1814 recall this event, which had symbolic significance for the subsequent restoration of the Bourbon dynasty.
Among the exhibits are examples of cold steel weapons from the late 18th–early 19th centuries, award medals “For the Taking of Paris,” and the medal “On the Stay of Emperor Alexander I in Paris,” produced by J.-B. Andrieu at the Paris Mint.
The exhibition was organized with the participation of private collectors Alexander Vikhrov, Tatyana and Sergey Podstanitsky.
