On Sunday, July 14 the A.P. Chekhov House-Museum celebrates its 70th anniversary!
All day during the museum's opening hours admission to the permanent exhibition is free.
To mark the anniversary, the V.I. Dal Department of GMIRLI on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya will open the exhibition "In My House, Resembling a Chest of Drawers...", dedicated to the history of the formation of the Moscow A.P. Chekhov museum — the largest Chekhov collection in the world by number of artifacts.
"I live in Kudrino, opposite the 4th gymnasium, in Korneev's house, resembling a chest of drawers. The color of the house is 'liberal', that is, red," A.P. Chekhov wrote when giving his new address, where he and his family were destined to live for four years. It was here that the writer's development as an author of 'major literature' took place: his first substantial novellas were written here, his first well-known plays were staged in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and from here in April 1890 Chekhov set off on his journey to the penal island of Sakhalin and to the East.
The path from the idea of a Chekhov museum to its realization was not an easy one. For almost half a century the cultural and museum community strove to open a memorial Chekhov museum within the walls of the "house-chest-of-drawers" on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya. The first A.P. Chekhov museum in Moscow was created at the initiative of the editorial board of the magazine "Russkaya Mysl" and the writer's family and was opened on April 25, 1912 at the Rumyantsev Museum. On October 17, 1921 the Moscow State Museum named after A.P. Chekhov was established (from which the V.I. Dal Department of GMIRLI traces its origins), long searching for its place on the map of Moscow. Only in July 1954, on the 50th anniversary of the writer's death, did the A.P. Chekhov House-Museum open on Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya. You can learn more about this at the exhibition "In My House, Resembling a Chest of Drawers...", which will open to visitors on July 16.
