Zhigansk Historical Museum
About museum
The district historical museum of Zhigansk District is located in the village of Zhigansk and serves as the center of the Zhigansk National Evenki District. It was established in 1989 on the basis of a school museum. In 2010 the museum received the President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) prize named after Professor M. F. Gabyshev, "Museum of the Year", for its contribution to the development of museum work in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). In 2012 the museum was awarded an Honorary Diploma from the Association of Evenks of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for its contribution to the preservation and development of Evenki culture. The museum comprises three main buildings: the historical museum, the house-museum of the first President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) M. E. Nikolaev, and a Yakut izba, as well as summer structures: an Evenki urasa and an ostrog tower. The museum's general focus is the history of Zhigansk District. The museum is visited by more than 3,500 people annually, of whom 300 are international tourists. The museum's activities include research and exhibitions, guided tours and lectures, collections management and research, and museum education.
