Ural Geological Museum

About museum

Ural Geological Museum — one of the largest mineralogical museums in Russia, exhibiting stone specimens exclusively of Ural origin. The best that the nature of the Urals has produced over many decades is concentrated in these collections. Geological and mining enterprises of the Urals participated in creating the museum's exhibits, which is why it is one of the best regional museums in the world.

The pride of the museum is the so-called 'Golden Room', opened to visitors in November 2005. It showcases, for the first time in the Urals, collections of green beryls, emeralds and alexandrites from the Malyshevskoye deposit (the largest collection in the world). Collections of native gold, platinum, demantoids, samples of Ural diamonds and a rare euclase crystal are presented.

Among the statesmen who visited the museum were Chairman of the Communist Party of China Mao Zedong, Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, President of the Republic of Indonesia Sukarno, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N.I. Ryzhkov, and President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin.
