Mezen Historical and Local History Museum
About museum
On January 18, 1980, a branch of the Arkhangelsk Local History Museum was opened in Mezen. It is dedicated to preserving, studying and exhibiting the historical and cultural heritage of the Mezen region. The museum houses more than 9,000 original items, documents and photographs. In 2015 a permanent exhibition, 'The Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Mezen Region from Ancient Times to the Present', created by museum staff and artist T. M. Elatomtseva, was opened. Visitors can learn about the lives of local entrepreneurs, the customs of the Pomors, traditional Mezen crafts, the history of Mezen residents' participation in sea voyages, their ability to survive in harsh conditions, and their military and labor feats. Today the Mezen Historical and Local History Museum serves as a center for local history work, an organizer of the cultural and educational life of local residents, and an information resource for the district's public museums.
