Pogankin Chambers of the Pskov Museum-Reserve

About museum

Since November 7, 2018, restoration work has been carried out in the Pogankin Chambers. After the restoration is completed, this museum complex will once again become the center of Pskov. The Pogankin Chambers—the largest secular building of the 17th century within ancient Pskov—are located in the historic center, inside the Okolny Gorod, on Polonishche. The building was erected at the commission of Sergei Ivanovich Pogankin, the city’s leading merchant and head of his family. According to legend, he acquired his surname either because he was of a different faith or because he made his fortune by dishonest means. The owner himself lived in the chambers with his son and his family, while goods were stored in the cellars. After Pogankin’s death the chambers were seized by the Trubinskys, but later passed into the possession of the Rimsky-Korsakovs. On August 9, 1903, Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna visited Pskov and the Pogankin Chambers. During the Great Patriotic War the museum continued to operate under occupation. Now we see that the restoration of the Pogankin Chambers will be completed and they will become the central museum complex of Pskov.
