Natural History Department of the Volsk Local History Museum
About museum
The Natural History Department of the Scientific and Educational Museum, fully established in the 1930s, was after reconstruction in 1996 presented with a fundamentally new exhibition covering 250 sq. m. The dioramas employ a cenological approach to show the region's nature, and the Cretaceous profile is revealed with a unique characterization of Cretaceous flora. The hall is devoted to the ecological relationship between humans and nature and provides a comprehensive overview of the physico-geographical conditions, geology, paleontology, and natural monuments of the Volsky district. The Natural History Department is one of the best natural history sections among local history museums in the Volga region. The exhibition features collections of paleontological finds, a gift from the British National Museum, a donation from the Ural Geological Museum (Yekaterinburg), letters and samples of Kola rocks from Academician A. E. Fersman, and the Saratov meteorite. The botanical garden associated with the Natural History Department has existed since 1920 and covers an area of 0.17 ha. Colorful dioramas illustrate natural changes through the seasons.
