Waldau Castle Museum
About museum
Officially, the Waldau Museum was opened in February 2007, but for decades before that it operated on a voluntary basis. Local residents brought various exhibits and collections to Andrey Barinov, the museum's founder. The museum has four halls dedicated to the archaeology of Prussia; the Teutonic Order and the history of the castle; the stay of Peter I and the Great Embassy; the Napoleonic Wars; the German poet Maximilian von Schenkendorf; an ethnographic collection of East Prussia; the First and Second World Wars; and socialism. As the museum had outgrown its premises in the technical college, it was decided to move it to Waldau Castle, which is 754 years old. The official opening took place in a hall on the castle's first floor, where local officials, local historians, and sponsors were invited.
