Okha Local History Museum
About museum
On 30 March 1971 the Okha Local History Museum was opened in the city of Okha; the idea belonged to E. I. Mikheeva. At her initiative a public council of 15 people was created in 1969, and in 1978 the museum received the status of a branch of the regional local history museum. In 2003 the museum became municipal, and in 2006 it moved to a new building. As of 1 January 2022 the main collection consists of 11,394 storage units, and the scientific and auxiliary fund consists of 4,159 units. The museum collection includes documents, ethnography, archaeology, a natural science collection, numismatics, rare books and more. The permanent exhibition presents more than 400 items representing the history and culture of the peoples of Northern Sakhalin. The museum receives more than 15,000 visitors annually.
