The National Gallery of the Komi Republic was founded in 1943 in Syktyvkar. Its predecessor was the Republican Art Museum. At the beginning of its existence the gallery represented Komi art. It was opened to the public in 1947. Since then the gallery's collections have expanded and include works by local, pre-revolutionary Russian, and Soviet artists, as well as foreign artists. In 1993 the first permanent exhibition presenting all sections of the collection was opened. Today the gallery's holdings include about 10,000 works from various art forms. The main task of the gallery is the study and popularization of the collections, as well as presenting them to a wide audience.
