Afanasy Nikolayevich Osipov — a Soviet and Russian Yakut painter, graphic artist, and educator. People's Artist of the USSR (1988). Laureate of the RSFSR State Prize named after I. E. Repin (1986). Born in the II Ergitsky nasleg (now Gorny Ulus, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)). He graduated from the Yakutsk Cooperative Technical School, the Moscow Secondary Art School, and received his higher education at the Moscow State Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov.
 
From 1953 he participated in republican exhibitions, and from 1955 his works were shown at major all-Union, Russian, zonal, regional, and international art exhibitions. The artist also held solo exhibitions in leading cities of Russia and abroad. He taught at the Yakutsk Art School, served as head of the painting department of the Yakut branch of the Krasnoyarsk State Art Institute, and later was a professor and head of the painting department at the Arctic Institute of Culture and Arts in Yakutsk. After 2004 he returned to independent creative work. Among his significant achievements was participation in the creation of the State Emblem of the Yakut Republic of Sakha. Afanasy Nikolayevich Osipov passed away on 11 September 2017 in Yakutsk and was buried on Yakut soil.
