Gold Embroidery Museum «Torzhok Gold Embroiderers»
About museum
Torzhok is famous for its gold-embroidery art, represented by the Torzhok Gold Embroiderers. In 1911, D. D. Romanov took the initiative to open a museum of gold embroidery at the instructional-demonstration gold-embroidery workshops of the Cottage Industry Department. Today the exhibition reflects the centuries-old history of this unique craft — from its origins to the present day. The museum displays more than a thousand items that have witnessed historical events. Visitors take an engaging tour through the history of gold embroidery, from the 10th century to modern times. A demonstration master class using embroidery hoops is also offered, during which tourists can learn the secrets of gold-embroidery techniques. At the end of the tour, guests can embroider an exclusive souvenir with gold thread (kanitel) and learn many interesting details from the craftswomen of the Torzhok Gold Embroiderers.
