Museum of the History of Luga Navigation

Since 2004, work has been underway in the town of Luga in the Leningrad Region to create the Museum of the History of Luga Navigation. Its purpose is to collect and preserve objects and documents related to the history of the Luga waterway, traditional wooden shipbuilding, the Tolmachevskaya landing and ship-repair workshops, the Ust-Luga port, the Luga naval base, as well as figures of the Russian Navy and river fleet whose names are associated with the Luga region. In recent years the museum has organized a number of themed exhibitions, lectures and film screenings for schoolchildren, held six international scientific and practical conferences titled "Era of Steamships" and published their proceedings; a navigation guide to the Luga River and a handbook of water-tourism routes for the Luga district have been released. Work is currently underway to create a permanent exhibition.
