Museum of the History of the City of Sovetsk
About museum
The Museum of the History of the City of Sovetsk was founded on April 6, 1987, and is one of the branches of the Kaliningrad Regional Historical and Art Museum. On August 22, 1992, the museum opened and received its first visitors, and on March 1, 1999, it became a municipal cultural institution. The museum's exhibition allows visitors to become acquainted with the centuries-old history of the town: its founding by the knights of the Teutonic Order, the granting of town rights in 1552, the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, and the events of the First and Second World Wars. In addition, the museum presents notable Tilsit figures: the Romantic poet Max von Schenkendorf, the writer and poet Johannes Bobrowski, the Lithuanian philosopher and public figure Vilhelmas Vidūnas, and the playwright and writer Hermann Sudermann.
