A. M. Gorky Memorial Apartment Museum
About museum
On September 15, 1971 the A. M. Gorky museum-apartment was opened in the Peshkovs' last Nizhny Novgorod apartment. It was located in the wooden two-story house of Baron N. F. Kirshbaum, which is a federal historical and cultural monument. After the October Revolution of 1917 the apartment was converted into a boarding house. In 1932 a plaque was installed on the house in memory of 40 years of M. Gorky's activity, which prompted the idea of creating a museum. The restored interiors are based on the memories of E. P. Peshkova. It was a center of cultural, artistic and public life in early 20th-century Nizhny Novgorod. Here A. M. Gorky completed the play "The Lower Depths", wrote the poem "The Man" and began writing the novel "Mother". Correspondents and visitors to Gorky, including F. I. Chaliapin, also visited this apartment. Today the museum contains the authentic furnishings of the house, including about 1,500 exhibits, such as Gorky's writing desk and library.
