Memorial Complex "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan
About museum
The Historical and Memorial Complex "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan is part of the "Battle of Stalingrad" museum-reserve and is the most immediate reflection of the events of World War II and the Battle of Stalingrad. The idea of erecting a majestic monument in Volgograd in memory of the Battle of Stalingrad emerged at the end of the hostilities. A competition for its design was held in 1945–1955, and the author and head of the team of builders was People's Artist of the USSR, sculptor E. V. Vuchetich, while the chief architect was Ya. B. Belopolsky. They sought to recreate the images of the heroic defenders of the Fatherland, to show their determination to win, to awaken memories of the fighting on the Volga, and to give people the opportunity to feel themselves participants in the Battle of Stalingrad.
