Kursk Regional Museum of Local Lore is currently one of the most important museums in the region, offering visitors a rich collection of exhibits and presenting the history of Kursk Oblast. In 1903, on the initiative of Kursk Governor Nikolai Nikolaevich Gordeev, the museum was established. On 31 January 1905 the museum was opened to visitors. Today the museum houses more than 181,000 items, including collections of beads, porcelain, weapons, numismatics, paintings, Cyrillic printed and manuscript books, antique furniture, applied art objects and works of painting and sculpture. The museum cooperates with educational institutions in Kursk and is one of the region's major museums, providing visitors with a rich collection of exhibits and representing the history of Kursk Oblast.
