About museum
The museum's Historical Department houses the largest number of exhibits, covering a time span from the ancient history of the Altai to the present. Here you can see a sarcophagus, a cauldron, weapons from Scythian kurgans, shamanic cult objects, artistic castings, Buddhist sculptures, collections of clocks and samovars, weaponry and other unique items. One of the most valuable exhibits is the house of N. I. Assanov, built in 1901 by K. K. Lygin, regarded as the best architect of Siberia. There are also collections from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, the Pazyryk culture of the Scythians, the ethnography of the Kumandins, ornamental wooden lacework (house carving) and Eastern art, as well as a collection of Altai petroglyphs comprising more than 300 images from different periods, themes and styles. You can also learn about the history of Belovodye, Shambhala, the Cossack settlement of Southern Siberia and the founding of the Bikatun ostrog.
