N. G. Zavgorodny Local History Museum
About museum
The first exhibition dedicated to the history of the village of Mikhaylovsk was shown in Mikhaylovsk in 1976 at the House of Pioneers. On November 2, 1984, on the 200th anniversary of the village's founding, the museum received its own premises; it was solemnly opened in the inner courtyard of the military commissariat. Although the space was small, the museum was already alive. Unfortunately, Nikolai Georgievich Zavgorodny was unable to obtain a worthy place for his creation, which had become a public treasure, before his death. He died in 1995, and just four years later the village was granted city status and the museum moved to the very center of the city. It is now housed in a two-story building in the center of Mikhaylovsk and bears the name of its founder. Stepping over the threshold, one immediately sees a display dedicated to the memory of Nikolai Georgievich Zavgorodny — you will see certificates, medals, letters, his eyeglasses and even his fountain pen, and a photograph of the first exhibition that started it all. Thus one man began the preservation of the history of his small homeland. On the first floor of the museum is the "Exhibition Hall", where most events and temporary exhibitions take place. On the second floor there are two halls: "Everyday Life" (which includes the departments of archaeology, flora and fauna, and ethnography) and the "Hall of Military Glory" — which tells the story of the Civil War, the Great Patriotic War, and the post-war reconstruction period.
