Yershov (Sapozhnikov) House. Gorokhovets Historical and Architectural Museum
About museum
Ancient Russian stone residential architecture impresses with its appearance. The house was built by the wealthy merchant Semyon Yershov at the end of the 17th century and stands at the foot of Puzhalova Hill. It has a monumental volume and is characteristic of the ornate Russian style (uzorochye) of the late 17th century. Inside the house there are vaulted walls and staircases, as well as a basement floor. At the end of the 18th century the wooden story was replaced with a stone one, and an entrance annex was added. An ancient fence with gates has survived to this day - an example of Old Russian small-scale architectural forms, which makes the house the only monument of wooden architecture of the 17th century in the Vladimir Region. It is a fine example of the flourishing of an ancient culture.
