About museum
The Altai Museum was founded on September 8, 1989, and is dedicated to the history of Altai literature, music, theater, cinema, fine arts and folk arts. Currently the museum's collection includes more than 72,000 items, including the personal collection of writer, director and actor V. M. Shukshin, the collection of the artist, scholar and public figure N. K. Roerich and his family, the collection of writer G. D. Grebenshchikov and other collections of Altai cultural figures. The museum's exhibition complex consists of 12 halls reflecting the historical and cultural processes on the territory of Altai from Scythian times to the present day. The museum carries out educational activities, expanding the cultural space in Altai Krai, and also organizes the promotion of achievements in the field of Altai culture and art. The museum has two branches and its own archive. Among the most valuable collections are the personal collections of V. M. Shukshin, N. K. Roerich and G. D. Grebenshchikov, and items from S. I. Rudenko's archaeological expeditions in Altai.
