City Museum of the Karabash Urban District
About museum
In the small town of Karabash, once called the copper capital of Russia, the idea of creating a local history museum was proposed long before its opening. Andrey Afanasyevich Panov, editor of the town's local newspaper, became the main organizer of the project. He collected and systematized a rich body of material from 90 folders. Many townspeople were inspired by the idea and offered their help free of charge. The official opening of the museum took place on October 30, 1967. Fenya Vasilievna Nesterenko became the first director and tour guide. In 1978 the museum was granted state status. Over the years it moved several times and finally settled in a wooden building constructed in the early 20th century. The museum's collections comprise about 4,000 exhibits, including photographs, documents, household items, taxidermy specimens, paintings, icons, minerals and much more.
