Historical and Art Museum named after Academician M.K. Yangel
About museum
On October 15, 1977, in Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky a monument was erected to a native of the Nizhneilimsky District, twice Hero of Socialist Labor and academician Mikhail Kuzmich Yangel, and the museum named after the academician was officially opened. Initially an exhibition dedicated to Yangel's life and work was created. The museum's holdings consisted of personal belongings, books, documents, photographs, models of satellites and space rockets, badges, stamps, calendars and other items donated by Mikhail Kuzmich's wife Irina Strazheva and the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau. The museum includes memorial, local history and branch departments, and also hosts exhibitions and displays in various fields: local history, ecology, military-patriotic education, mineralogy, archaeology, twinning relations, astronautics, and the promotion of decorative-applied and fine arts. The museum allows visitors to consult books and journals from the museum library.
