Provincial Museum
About museum
The Tobolsk Museum is the first museum in Siberia; it was founded in 1870 by the secretary of the Provincial Statistical Committee, Ivan Nikolaevich Yushkov, under the patronage of Governor A. S. Sollogub. During its first two decades the museum operated under the Statistical Committee, but because the existing premises were inadequate and lacked space it was decided to build a separate building for the museum. The initiator of the construction was Vladimir Alexandrovich Troinitsky, an Actual State Councilor of the province. The museum presents unique exhibits from the original collections: ethnographic, archaeological, paleontological, natural history and art. Exhibitions of the Provincial Museum allow visitors to become acquainted with the history of the development of museology in Tobolsk.
