The Museum of the History of Art was founded on August 1, 1968. Its collection comprises more than 9,000 exhibits, including works by Russian and Soviet painters of the 19th–20th centuries, 19th-century icons, graphics (more than 5,000 original and printed works by domestic and foreign authors of the late 19th–20th centuries) and over 1,600 exhibits of the late 19th–20th centuries: folk clay toys, weaving and embroidery by masters of the Bryansk region, copper casting from the southwestern districts of the region, works in crystal and glass by artists of the Dyatkovo Crystal Factory, Russian and Soviet sculpture of the 20th century. On September 14, 1995, a branch, the "Museum of the Tkachev Brothers," was opened, where more than 700 works by A. P. and S. P. Tkachev are kept: canvases that became classics of visual art of the second half of the 20th century, works from their training in the art circle of the Bezhitsa House of Pioneers, academic-period study pieces, series devoted to places associated with Tyutchev, European travels, studies and sketches for works from various years.
