Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, Bogolyubovo
About museum
Two kilometers from Vladimir, Prince Andrei built a town of stone which he named Bogolyubovo. From 1158 to 1165 a palace complex was created in the town, which to this day has preserved the northern stair tower, recognized by UNESCO, and the passage that connected it with the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos. It was here that Prince Andrei died as a result of a political intrigue by the Kuchkovichi boyars. Today a women's monastery is located on the grounds of the former palace; it admits visitors outside of church service times. The Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos houses a museum exhibition about Prince Andrei and the architectural ensemble he created. The cathedral's wall paintings were executed in the style of ancient frescoes, modeled on the Assumption Cathedral of Vladimir, by Lev Parilov.
