The Prikaznaya Izba will present “Dacha Stories” of the 19th century An exhibition “Dacha Stories” (0+) has opened at the Prikaznaya Izba museum (a department of the Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore named after P. V. Alabin). Ahead of the vacation season, which many people spend at dachas, the exhibition aims to acquaint visitors with the traditions and features of summer leisure in Vyatka in the late 19th–early 20th centuries. “Many Vyatka merchants owned summer houses within the city or outside it. Leisure at the Zagorodny Garden and the Summer Club was also popular. And at the end of the 19th century a yacht club opened in Vyatka — one of the most refined organizations through which members of Vyatka’s high society spent their leisure,” staff at the Prikaznaya Izba said. The exhibition features items essential to dacha life: wicker furniture, musical instruments, men’s and women’s summer clothing and fashionable accessories of the time, and much more. Young children will be interested in antique toys. To fully immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the late 19th–early 20th centuries, installations have been created depicting outdoor leisure and life on a dacha veranda. It’s also possible to take original photographs here. Visitors will learn the “scary” story of merchant Bulychev’s dacha, about the traditional pastimes of early 20th-century dacha-goers, and about the Vyatka yacht club (and can even read its charter). The photographs on display capture the favorite leisure spots of the city’s residents — the Zagorodny Garden, the Summer Club on the embankment, and the dachas of notable Vyatka residents. During the exhibition there will be quizzes, workshops, and interactive programs about summer entertainments of the early 20th century. The exhibition at the Prikaznaya Izba will run throughout the summer.
