In 1912 the museum was founded; it was established by Georgy Alexandrovich Sergeev, director of the Vytegra Real School, and Leonard Frantsevich Vinnitsky, an engineer of waterways of the Mariinsky Water System. Currently the museum's exhibition is divided into three parts: "Natural Wealth of the Region", "Antiquities of Vytegra" and "History of the Vytegra Region". The museum's collection consists of 77,000 items, of which more than 42,000 are primary holdings. The museum houses 23 collections: precious metals, sculpture, painting, books, Old Russian painting, textiles, wood, medals (insignia, badges), leather (rubber, bone, plastic), faience (glass, clay), nature specimens, numismatics, paper money, metal, archaeology, weapons, negatives, photo and film materials, documents, printed publications and documents related to the fleet, object holdings related to the fleet, and visual materials related to the fleet. The museum offers various services: guided tours, organization and staging of exhibitions, storage of exhibits, sale of souvenir products, and placement and promotion of advertising.
