The museum exhibits items from the life of the peoples of Yakutia, as well as unique archaeological and anthropological collections. The museum is one of the most important historical and cultural centers of the Vilyuysky district.

\r\nOn May 24, 1917, the Vilyuysky Local History Museum was opened in the town of Vilyuysk. The founder and creator of the museum was Petr Khrisanfovich Starovatov - a teacher, a participant in the defense of the town against White insurgents, a Hero of Labor in Yakutia, a local historian, and the person who reported the diamond and gas deposits on the Vilyuy. In 1964 the museum was named after P. Kh. Starovatov. In 2007 the museum received the status of a municipal institution. It presents items from the life of the peoples of Yakutia, as well as archaeological and anthropological collections. The museum is an important historical and cultural center of the Vilyuysky district. It consists of departments of natural history, ethnography, and the history of the town of Vilyuysk and Vilyuysky ulus.
