Verkhovazhsky District Historical Museum
About museum
Located on the border with Arkhangelsk Oblast, Verkhovazhsky District has Verkhovazhye as its center, situated 230 km from Vologda. In ancient times these lands were inhabited by small Finno-Ugric tribes engaged in hunting and fishing. From the beginning of the first millennium the process of settlement by Slavs from Novgorod began. Later Verkhovazhye became a fairly large trading center and was also known for the Alekseevskaya Fair, which was held there regularly. Today the fair tradition is being revived. The Verkhovazhsky District Municipal Historical Museum is housed in the two-story wooden mansion of the former merchant Yurensky. In the winter of 1730 the future great scientist Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov passed through the settlement of Verkhovazhye along the road with fish carts.
