Yuzhno-Kurilsk Local History Museum
About museum
On May 30, 1991, the district local history museum was opened at the initiative of local historian Fedor Ivanovich Pyzhyanov. Since then more than 7,600 exhibits have been accumulated here, representing the museum's eight halls. Visitors can see geographic and climatic maps, a geological model, herbarium specimens, taxidermy specimens, photographs of birds and mammals, rock samples, as well as displays of volcanoes, ceramics, tools of ancient inhabitants, exhibits about the Ainu, and displays on the history of the settlement of the Kuril Islands. The museum hosts guided tours, lectures, museum lessons, master classes, and screenings of films dedicated to this territory. The museum has become an information resource for local residents and visitors to the district, allowing them to gain greater knowledge about the Kuril Islands.
